The most wonderful book on Guinea Pigs I've ever encountered
I do research on every animal I own and this was one of the most informative books I have ever found. The animation is extrordinary and it has made my daughter aware that books can help us all in raising our animals properly. I don't know how many times we have referred to it for one question or another about our guinea pigs. We also love to just go back and look at the pictures because they make us smile. A wonderful childrens book, and if I do say so myself, it is great for adults too. I am so very glad we found this book and bought it. I would highly recommend it to anyone getting or already having a guinea pig. Jackie and Kathy Fisher

Eerie reality
Rarely do I find myself thinking about passages in a book months, even years, after I have read the book. When I do, however, it means something extradordinary has happened. Two years have passed and still I think about numerous passages from this book. It is almost like a dream, unsettling and on the edge of frightening. I see the story as an allegory dangerously close to humanity's darker side. This is not an easy book to read because it is so horribly truthful at times, and starkly ugly at others. It could generate much debate about "art" and "reality", but it is not for the weakly motivated soul. Be prepared for a terrible journey buffered only by brilliant prose.
Smudge
by John A. Rowe
Rowe (The Gingerbread Man, 1996, etc.) presents another delightfully eccentric character from his bestiary: an old storytelling rat named Smudge, who recalls his childhood abduction by a bird. Back at the nest, after a brief stint as a beak buffer, he becomes part of the family, learning to chirp and ``even thought about laying an egg.'' But the birds fly off and he is snatched by a dog. The dogs run off--he is too slow--and his next forced domicile is a rabbit hutch. They bound off, and Smudge's hopping can't compare. So it goes with fish and squirrels: Smudge is first used by his captor, then abandoned when he can't mimic his abductor's most salient attribute. At last, glory be, he is whisked off by a brown rat with a big smile: Mom. Rowe replays the to-thine-own-self-be-true theme with a combination of drollery and piquancy, with artwork that is dauntingly emotional: Sometimes Smudge is diminutive, looking highly vulnerable and far away; at other times readers are right there in the dark-toned illustrations, holding Smudge's hand, sharing his journey toward home.
Complete Story of the Three Blind Mice

"Galdone's familiar, jaunty artwork is done in rich colors and catches all the humorous nuances of a tale that will appeal greatly to young children."--ALA Booklist.
The Greatest of All : A Japanese Folktale
by Eric A. Kimmel, Giora Carmi (Illustrator)
In this smooth retelling of ``The Wedding of the Mouse,'' from Uchida's classic The Dancing Kettle (1947), Father Mouse approaches the emperor as the greatest possible bridegroom for his daughter. Not so, says the emperor: the sun can make him seek shade. The mouse pursues his quest from sun to cloud to wind to wall, only to have the wall demur like the others: one day the tunneling field mouse will bring him down, he says, so the mouse maiden is allowed to wed her own beloved after all. Carmi uses tall frames and details of dress to suggest a Japanese setting; her style is lively and accessible but undistinguished, the illustrations' muted tomato-soup borders more distracting than harmonious. Still, an acceptable setting for a good story. (Folklore/Picture book. 4-10) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
Heetunka's Harvest : A Tale of the Plains Indians
by Jennifer Berry Jones, Shannon Keegan (Illustrator)
Ages 5-8. Heetunka the bean mouse spends the late summer gathering beans so her family will have enough food to last the winter. In the fall, Indian women come and take some of her beans, leaving a like amount of corn or suet in exchange. A Dakota woman who wants beans for her family does not acknowledge Heetunka's hard work or rights and takes all that she finds, leaving nothing in exchange and ignoring Heetunka's wails. That night, a prairie fire burns the woman's tepee and all her possessions, although no other home in the settlement is harmed, forcing her family to rely on relatives for help to keep from starving. The illustrations are large and effectively framed by examples of Indian beadwork and woodwork, making them perfect to show during group reading, but the messages of fair play and respect are so overt that they overwhelm the story.

Ferrets (Nature Watch)
by Sylvia A. Johnson
These non-rodent relatives of the weasel, badger, and skunk, often the source of controversy over their appropriateness as house pets, are gaining in popularity, next in line to cats and dogs. Many young pet owners may be interested in finding out how to choose, feed, live with, and care for a ferret; while most of this entry in the Carolrhoda Nature Watch series is a manual for pet owners devoted to the caring and keep of domesticated ferrets, Johnson (Tomatoes, Potatoes, Corn, and Beans, p. 301, etc.) also considers its background and its historical uses as a working animal for hunting and pest control. The presentation of information is straightforward and easy to follow; full-color photographs throughout depict ferrets at work and play, including hunting for rabbits in the rubble of WW II Germany or engaging in backyard fun, such as a game of hide-and-seek or catch. A section on the black-footed ferret, a wild cousin, is also included

excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who would like to learn about the biology of ferrets. There are lots of pictures, both illitrations and photographs of the interal workings of the ferret. It's a great way for anyone interested in ferrets to learn how they work. This book isn't a large one with 330 pages of text and illitration, but the information that it contains is seeping out it's binding. It is very extensive covering everything from ferreting to breeding and the reproductive cycle to common and not so common diseases. With illistrations showing you exactly what everything looks like. This is something every ferret owner should have, and never be without!
